Notes from a reader (Coverage)

3 min read

Before you send your work out, it helps to know how it reads. Notes from a reader goes through your whole script or manuscript, first page to last, and writes you coverage, the kind of notes a good studio or publisher's reader would: what is working, what to look at again, scene by scene or chapter by chapter.

Your words stay yours

The reader never rewrites a line or suggests replacement wording. Every note points at what is already on your pages, and every quote it shows you is checked against your pages before you see it. If the reader paraphrased a line, the quote is dropped and only the note remains.

What you get

  • A one-line headline and a short paragraph on the work as a whole.
  • What's working and what to look at again, each tied to a scene or chapter and a line of yours.
  • The craft: premise, structure, character, dialogue, pacing, tone, originality and audience, each scored out of 10 with a sentence.
  • Scene by scene (or chapter by chapter) notes, marked working or look again.
  • The few changes that would most improve the next draft.
  • The reader's verdict and a score out of 100, as one honest line at the end.

How to get notes

  1. Open your project and find Notes from a reader in the Story sidebar, under Completion. It is also a stop on the Studio line, right after Draft complete.
  2. Tap Get notes. You will see how many scenes or chapters will be read and what it costs in credits, before anything runs.
  3. Tap Read it. A full read takes a minute or two.
  4. Open the notes to read them beside your pages.

Tip. Your notes are kept. When you change your pages, the notes say they are about an earlier draft, and you can get fresh notes to see how the new draft moves. Earlier scores stay listed so you can watch the work improve.
