Getting started

Start from a classic

3 min read

MakeVox has a library of tens of thousands of public-domain books you can start a story from. Retell Pride and Prejudice from Mr Darcy's side, set Dracula in your town, or study how Conan Doyle builds a mystery by working inside one.

Find a book

  1. Open Classics: the Classics button at the top of My Stories, or Start from a classic when you start something new.
  2. Browse the shelves (Adventure, Mystery, Romance, Horror, Myths & legends, Shakespeare), or search.
  3. Search by Title or author, or switch to Subject or genre to look for a kind of book, like detective or ghost stories.
  4. Each book shows its cover, author and source. Search uses a weekly catalog snapshot, so a new book can take up to a week to appear.

Start from this book

Open a book to see its estimated length and planned sections. Choose a format. Book makes a free copy of the cleaned original text. Screenplay or graphic novel / comic starts an AI adaptation of the whole work. An ambiguous editor preface may change the final count and adaptation quote.

  • Source licence pages and edition extras such as editor introductions, commentary, footnotes, indexes and contents are left out of the story. Removed edition material is saved in one Idea called Notes from the edition (Notes in the iOS app). The source link and author are saved in a separate source Idea.
  • Book costs no credits. MakeVox uses a short AI check only when a preface or introduction might be part of the story; it keeps an author's framing preface. The Book words are otherwise the source words, without a rewrite.
  • For Screenplay or graphic novel / comic, MakeVox shows a full-work credit estimate from the cleaned text before you start. It reserves credits and charges actual cost one chapter at a time. If credits run out, completed chapters stay in the story; add credits or upgrade and resume. Free accounts can adapt the first chapter as a sample.
  • Screenplay creates a new screenplay story with scene headings, action, character cues and dialogue. Graphic novel / comic creates a new story with an ordered panel plan; drawing panel art is a separate action. Plays and verse keep their original words verbatim while the format changes. Prose narration may become condensed visual action, while original dialogue and distinctive language stay where they play.
  • A Book story imported earlier also has an Adapt to… action, with the same estimate, chapter progress, and resume controls.

Public domain in the United States

These books are offered for use in the United States. Copyright lasts longer in some countries, so a book that is free to use in the US may not be where you live. Check your country before publishing.

Tip. If search says the catalog isn't answering, the shelves still work. Try the search again later.
